Previous seismicity

The region along the north coast of western Japan has been fairly active in the 20th century. In 1943 there was the damaging Tottori earthquake (M7.2), which occurred northeast of the 2000 earthquake.

Past earthquakes
Past earthquakes and this event with the focal mechanism determined by the FREESIA project.

In 1989-1990 there have been a series of moderate sized earthquakes (M4-5) in the region of the October 6, 2000 aftershocks. The sequence started in the south and appeared to propagate toward the north. Again, in 1997, there was another sequence that started in about the same place the south and moved toward the north.

The plot above shows the migration of seismicity between 1989 and 1997.

The plots above show a seismicity map and space-time plot for the activity before the October 6, 2000 earthquakes.
