Outline: |
We held an international symposium “Crustal Dynamics 2016” from July 19th to 22nd, 2016 in Takayama, Gifu, Japan. The venue, Takayama City Cultural Hall, was an ideal site for an international symposium, being located within a walking distance from the old town in Takayama where a taste of Edo period is nicely preserved. We had 143 participants (42 students), and 31 of them were from abroad. The symposium was a great success, having 46 oral and 82 poster presentations. A preceding workshop on the Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP) − Alpine Fault had been organized, and many overseas researchers including 8 New Zealand researchers working on this project attended it as well.
95 of the participants, including overseas researchers, attended a field trip around the Atotsugawa Fault on the first day. We observed fault structures in various scales: mylonites of the Funatsu Granite, which is a basement of the Hida region, a famous outcrop of the Atotsugawa Fault in Makawa, and offsets of river terraces due to lateral fault movements.
On the 20th, an overview of the whole project “Crustal Dynamics” by Yoshihisa Iio, the PI of the project, was followed by a session for A01 (stress group), in which recent studies on estimation of crustal stresses by precise determination of focal mechanisms of earthquakes were presented. In a subsequent session for A02 (deformation group), attempts to separate elastic and inelastic strains, and geological structures associated with inelastic strain were presented. In the evening, we held a grand reception in the Takayama Green Hotel. On the 21st in the morning session for B01 (structure group), studies using dense network of seismic stations and those on rock deformation mechanisms were presented. In the afternoon session for B02 (deformation experiments group), many papers on experimental achievements on rock deformation and rock-water interactions were presented. On the final day in the morning session for B03 (geofluids group), numerical, experimental, and field observational studies on distribution of fluid in rocks were presented. In the afternoon session by C01 (modeling group), numerical models which explains crustal deformation after the Tohoku Oki Earthquake and those on frictional sliding of faults were presented. The 4-days-long symposium was a great opportunity for us to exchange thoughts and ideas with first-class researchers in the world.

Session S-CG63 “Dynamics in mobile belts” in JpGU meeting 2016
Date: |
May 23 (Mon.) - 24 (Tue.), 2016 |
---|---|
Venue: |
International Exhibition Hall, Makuhari Messe |
A 1.5-days-long session “Dynamics in mobile belts” was held in JpGU meeting 2016 from May 23rd to 24th, being proposed mainly by members of “Crustal Dynamics”. The topics were more focused than last year and a session on crustal structures was held separately, but we have a larger number of presentations (75, 36 talks and 39 posters). It was one of the two longest sessions, comparable to “Paleoclimatology and paleoceanography” obtaining 6 timeslots. Although it was held in the farthest conference room from the entrance in Apa Hotel, active discussions took place there with people standing in the aisles.
A reception after the meeting on 23rd in “le jeu du ciel Makuhari” in TOKYO BAY MAKUHARI promoted discussion among 62 participants (22 students) having a spectacular night view from the 49th floor. On May 24th we organized an evening meeting, and discussed research progresses, reactions to Kumamoto Earthquake, and preparation for the midterm evaluation.
Fukahata, Y. (The principal convener of “Dynamics in mobile belts”)
